Shakespeare is renowned for his vividly descriptive, original, and pioneering use of imagery in many of his plays, but their effect on the audience’s understanding of his plays is most obvious in the tragedies, particularly in Macbeth. Images in Shakespeare’s works are used, according to Shakespeare critic G. Wilson Knight, to craft a play’s â€Å"atmosphere† or the permeating tone or mood of a play (3). However, this attitude between images and atmosphere creates an environment where different definitions of images contribute to different interpretations of the subjective atmosphere that is born out of each individual reader’s perception of the play. Because of this discrepancy, a strict definition of the term â€Å"image† should be observed. The term â€Å"image† will refer to physical objects or actions that are used by Shakespeare to clarify broad themes and character insights throughout the play. Specifically, the classification o f water imagery present throughout Macbeth will be discussed broadly to include descriptions of rain, water, and the act of cleansing with water, whether or not they are real or imagined by the characters. Many different types of imagery exist and there is at least one dramatic purpose for each image. By analyzing William Shakespeares Macbeth, it is evident that darkness imagery is used for three dramatic purposes. In the very beginning of the play the three witches are talking and the first witch says, When shall we three meet again? In thunder, lightning, or in rain? Later on, the Sergeant is talking with Duncan and Malcolm when he states, Ship wrecking storms and direful thunders break. This example of darkness imagery is saying that the day is turning into night, all the good things are going to sleep, and the evil creatures are coming out. The evil in this previous quotation and the two before adds to the ominous atmosphere. Since the imagery creates an ominous atmosphere it would then lead to the second dramatic purpose, to arouse the emotions of the audience. Darkness imagery is a very good tool for arousing the emotions of the audience. It enables people to create a mental picture of what they are reading. For example, Duncan and Macbeth were talking when Macbeth says aside, Stars, hide your fires! Let not light see my black and deep desires. When words like black and desire are put in that context it creates many horrible mental pictures about murders and fights which arouses peoples emotions. Ross is later talking with an old man when he states By the clock `tis day, and yet dark night strangles the traveling lamp. In other words; although, the sun should be out, something is blocking the light. This example of darkness imagery creates an eerie feeling in the reader because it is very abnormal for the sun to be blocked. To help this example of imagery, the sun can also symbolize a monarch or king. His true range and vocal ability, even at its most subtl e points, sends shivers down your spine as the raw openness of the song seeps in. The complete soul-baring honesty of this song pulled me in and forced me to put this song on repeat. Lyrically, whoever this is written for must mean so much to him. Talking of being down at the bottom and being pulled back to the top by complete and unconditional love brings a tears to my eyes it’s so wonderful. Lace all of that together and you have what is, quite possibly, the best song I’ve heard him write so far. The optimism in his voice as the song progresses brings a smile to my face even as I sit here writing about it. It brings hope in its own special way. So, the moral of this story children, go listen to it and do it now. I promise that you won’t be disappointed and that you will love it just as much as I do. Don’t go in expecting it to be Asking Alexandria but expecting it to be Danny showing us what he’s made of and that he is more than just a one trick pony.
